This piece explores the duality of the human experience: the push and pull of the persona vs the appearance. This was inspired by a phrase I say very often, “two things can be true”. While I say this a lot, when it came to certain things like human interactions I couldn’t accept this phrase. How could someone be kind but rude, or how can this person be struggling but also light up a room? It sounds silly but it was easier to grasp that people are one dimensional. I came to believe that duality is all part of this collective human experience we call life. We create these contrasting labels to better understand something but duality is not something that’s meant to be understood but embraced. We are literally and figuratively three dimensional beings that are so complex even labels that describe our duality can’t define. These labels often times create a negative experience of how we view ourselves. Labels that are forced on to us create this push and pull of persona vs appearance.
